Frugal Tip Tuesday

Frugal Tip Tuesday – cheap snacking

Let’s face it, after a long day of working/chasing kids, there is nothing like sitting down to some TV with a cold beer and a salty snack. I love chips, but we don’t buy them on the regular. We sometimes have multi-grain nachos in the cupboard to go along with some salsa (that counts as a serving of veggies, right?), but even that isn’t something we always have.

Popcorn. We always have popcorn kernels. It might just be my favourite salty snack. I would eat it every night if I could. And the best part is; it’s super cheap! You can get name brand kernels for only $3 or $4 a jar, and it only takes 1/4 cup to make a decent size bowl. It is such a good deal, and yummy, why wouldn’t you want to eat it?

We never buy microwave popcorn; too expensive and too full of garbage. Plus our microwave isn’t very strong, and is too small inside to pop it properly anyways. Yes, that means I have bought it in the past and tried it out. I have talked about using a paper bag to make your own microwave popcorn before. That is a super cheap and quick way, but again, doesn’t work in my microwave.

So I had resulted to using my $200 Jamie Oliver Dutch Oven! Not the best idea. It started getting little burn marks on it, and it takes forever to heat up and pop the corn. So I had given up on having my favourite snack regularly. My wonderful husband took note of this, and while in the US on business, picked me up a Whirley Pop. It is fantastic! Super quick, and makes tons at a time! Now, in a matter of 2 or 3 minutes I can have a huge bowl of popcorn, and I’m not destroying a very expensive pot.

Do you have a favourite frugal snack?  Is it sweet or salty?

  1. Popcorn is one of my faves! Add a little grated fresh parmesan - a little luxury on a quiet evening! I do the hot air popper method - a little noisy, but like you said - who needs all the junk in the microwave variety!
    • I used to do the hot air popper too, I can't believe I forgot to mention that in the post! I have bought 2 or 3 different brands, and none of them work very well :(
