For most of my life I have battled acne. Starting around 12 years old, and only getting brief breaks while pregnant. It has been physically painful and so very frustrating!
I remember very clearly getting my first pimple. I didn’t care too much about it at the time, but a boy I had a crush on came right up to me and said “A zit! Welcome to the club!” and laughed and walked away. Thankfully I didn’t have too many more issues with kids teasing me for it, I had a hard enough time being so short and tiny, the last thing I needed was to be teased over yet another thing I couldn’t control. That’s the thing with acne, especially as a teen, it’s mostly hormonal, and you can’t do much about it. For most of my teen years I would switch between different products, trying new things that came out, and even going up to a strong spot treatment that was 10% benzoyl peroxide, which worked, but was super harsh. Even if my skin was mostly clear for a short time, it was always super oily. And back then, what I didn’t know, that most of the products I was trying were over drying my skin, causing it to over produce oil. And of course, without fail, right before I would get my period, 3 or 4 new ones would pop up on my chin.
This was my struggle until I was pregnant. My skin is incredible when pregnant. Clear, soft, smooth, I always get that “pregnant glow” that you hear about. But as soon as the baby is out, my skin goes back to being dull, dry, oily, and acne prone. How is it even possible to be all those things at once?!
I’ve tried just about every product out there:
Drugstore brands. Big national brands. Harsh chemicals. Sensitive skin products. “Natural” products. Homemade products. Expensive products from Sephora and Department stores.
Most of it will work for the short-term, but nothing would continue working for more than a few months.
I’ve tried changing my diet too. Cutting back on dairy and refined sugar, and increasing my water intake. And this too would work short-term, but honestly, I’m so sick of watching my diet that closely. I’ve been pregnant or breastfeeding for the greater part of the last 8 years, which restricted my eating, as did the last 9 months of dealing with gall stones. I’m not mentally strong enough to go through a restrictive diet again. We eat fairly healthy, and I drink lots of water, but I can’t start cutting things and waiting weeks and weeks to see if that works.
So I finally ordered Proactive+, and it arrived today.
I know you have all heard about it. It’s been the number one selling acne brand for as long as I can remember. It started being sold when I was a teen, but it was expensive and you could only buy it over the phone. I don’t think I ever asked my parents if they would buy it for me, but I’m sure they would have been worried about giving out their credit card information over the phone. I remember in my early 20s, when I had my own credit card, I bought a Proactive knock off. It was a similar 3 step system, but much cheaper, and it kinda worked. It worked enough that I kept using it for a year or so, but it eventually over dried my skin and made things worse.
I’m really hopeful that Proactive will help me. But I also don’t expect it to, since nothing else seems to work.
In between all my other pregnancies, I used homemade coconut oil and tea tree oil wipes, a light weight face cream, and a spot treatment when needed. But since having our 4th child my skin has been a disaster. Add to that dark circles and fine lines, and you’ve got one grouchy 33 year old!
The kit I ordered is the Proactive+ Complete Set, with a free bonus of their Deep Cleansing Brush, for $39.95 (free shipping, plus tax). It has a 60 day money back guarantee (minus shipping), you can send back the empty bottles if it didn’t work for you over those 60 days. Plus, I bought it through my Ebates account and got 16% cash back. I could easily have spent more money at the drugstore on other products! And this set even included an under eye cream!
Now for the before pictures. It’s really what everyone wants to see, right? After looking at these, they don’t even seem that bad, I’ve had worse skin days over the last couple months for sure, but this is what my skin is like right now. I took these pictures last night, and started using Proactive+ this morning.
I’ve only used it once, and my skin already feels softer, smoother, and more balanced. I’ll keep updating as the weeks go on!
I would love to hear your stories! Have you ever used Proactive+, or Proactive? Have you battled acne as a teen, or even as an adult like me?
